Majestic is the only word for this varied program of uplifting, familiar classics. Handel's Coronation anthems and favorite choruses from Messiah, Mozart's great Coronation Mass, stunning a cappella selections and a rousing spiritual complete an unforgettable evening of singing. The spirited Rochester Oratorio Society is joined by the polished choirs from Nazareth College and Houghton College in this keynote concert of the Fall Conference of the American Choral Directors' Association-New York Chapter. Alisa Thomason, soprano, Jessica Ann Best, mezzo-soprano, Joshua Bouillon, tenor and Caleb Woo, bass, are the soloists for the Mozart Coronation Mass, with the ROS Orchestra led by Artistic Director Eric Townell.

Traditional Christmas music with a modern touch fills the resplendent sanctuary of Third Presbyterian Church. The Rochester Oratorio Society Festival Brass and ROS's own chamber ensemble Resonanz set the pace in the thrilling Adam lay ybounden, by Rochester's own Carson Cooman. Sweet children's voices, seasonal readings offered by WXXI's Julia Figueras, dance-inspired and brilliant selections for choir and brass arranged by Eric Townell, the stirring Christmas Cantata of Daniel Pinkham and a jazzy setting of We Three Kings round out this inspiring, fun and heart-warming concert. Then, raise your own voices with the ROS in a suite of favorite carols to ring in the season.

Spirit of the Dance

with BIODANCE, Missy Pfohl Smith, Artistic Director
and the Antara Winds

Friday, March 9, 2012 at 7:30 pm
Hochstein Performance Hall

We're singing about dancing, this irresistibly energetic evening. The Rochester Oratorio Society starts the tune with Bizet's light and lilting Valse avec Choeur. The richness of woodwinds fills out our unique version of Brahms's beloved Liebeslieder waltzes, with original choreography by Missy Pfohl Smith. Then, BIODANCE takes the stage for the world-premiere performance of Scherzo, a new work by the internationally recognized choreographer and SUNY-Brockport artist Bill Evans, set to the music of Brahms. Six lusty, fun and sentimental Songs from the Bavarian Highlands by Edward Elgar will send you out with a skip in your step. With special guests, the Antara Winds, resident artists at the Hochstein School of Music.

National Vocal Competition

Hochstein Performance Hall

Rochester’s Classical Idol is a juried vocal competition with audience participation.  Classical Idol seeks the best emerging vocal talent in the classical music genre.  The Rochester Oratorio Society invites Classical Idol singers to perform opera, oratorio, art song or musical theater before a panel of judges and a live audience.

In its 5th year (Classical Idol 5 -- 2010), the competition welcomed 71 entrants hailing from 7 different countries.  Cash prizes are awarded to the top three finalists and to an audience-choice favorite.  The first-prize winner also earns the opportunity for solo performance in concert with the Rochester Oratorio Society.

Rochester Sings!

with Gibbs & Main, Karine Stone, Artistic Director

Thursday, June 7, 2012 at 7:30 pm
Hochstein Performance Hall

Join us as we restore and celebrate the values that make our city great as we re-create the centennial of Rochester's weekly Friday Sings. These popular civic events promoted tolerance, understanding, community spirit and constructive enjoyment through voices lifted in song. The last such event was June 7th, 1912 with selections from the Rochester Songbook. It's a joy to rediscover these long-familiar favorites, moving anthems, period pieces by Stephen Foster and others, and patriotic selections that catch the heart. While we celebrate the historic event, Gibbs & Main help us look forward to the fresh music of tomorrow with the world-premiere of Lulu, by Rochester's own Diego Garcia. Celebrate the very best qualities of the city we love with the best artists our musical city has to offer.
